Lewis Hamilton told 2025 is his ‘best chance’ at an eighth F1 title

David Croft, a Sky Sports F1 commentator, believes that 2025 could be Lewis Hamilton’s best opportunity to secure his record-breaking eighth Formula 1 World Championship, especially now that he’s joined Ferrari. Hamilton, who tied Michael Schumacher’s record of seven World Drivers’ Championships in 2020, has been chasing the elusive eighth title since 2021. That year, he came incredibly close to clinching it, only to lose out in the dramatic and controversial finale at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where Max Verstappen claimed his first championship.

Since then, Hamilton’s journey with Mercedes has faced challenges, and after several difficult seasons, he announced his departure from the Silver Arrows to join Ferrari at the start of 2024. This move has generated significant attention, and Hamilton’s preparations for the 2025 season have already begun, with his first test with Ferrari taking place last week in Fiorano.

As the 2025 season approaches, the pressure and expectations surrounding Hamilton’s potential for securing that eighth title have intensified. Croft, also known as “Crofty,” discussed Hamilton’s future prospects at the Autosport Awards, suggesting that the 2025 season could present the best opportunity for Hamilton to add another championship to his illustrious career. He pointed out that, in terms of car development, teams will likely focus less on pushing innovations as aggressively as in previous years, with 2026 looming on the horizon. This shift in focus could play into Hamilton’s hands, as he may benefit from a more stable development environment.

Croft also noted that Ferrari, in particular, could be highly motivated in 2025 to deliver strong performance. The Italian team has been without a championship win for a long time, and securing a title with Hamilton could be the perfect way to showcase their capability. Additionally, the team has two prominent drivers in Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, both of whom are expected to play key roles in Ferrari’s pursuit of success. The pressure on Ferrari to prove themselves as contenders for the title could further fuel Hamilton’s drive for success.

Meanwhile, Hamilton has already completed a second private test with Ferrari at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, where he faced a setback when he spun off into the barriers, which briefly affected Leclerc’s running. Despite this, Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari is still viewed as a significant moment for both him and the sport.

Christian Horner, the team principal of Red Bull, also commented on Hamilton’s move to Ferrari. He expressed his excitement about the prospect of seeing the British driver in a red car, calling it “great for Formula 1” and “box office.” Horner acknowledged that the sight of Hamilton racing for Ferrari would add a new layer of excitement to the sport, as it brings a fresh dynamic to the competition. The combination of Hamilton’s status as one of the greatest drivers in F1 history and Ferrari’s long-standing tradition and fanbase promises to create an exciting narrative in the coming seasons.

As the start of the 2025 season draws closer, the racing world is eagerly anticipating what Hamilton’s new partnership with Ferrari will bring. The possibility of him securing that record-breaking eighth title is a story that fans, pundits, and teams alike will be watching closely. With Ferrari’s renewed focus and Hamilton’s unmatched experience, it’s clear that the upcoming season holds plenty of potential for both the driver and the team.
