Will Leclerc win two in a row ‘Mexico is good track for us on paper’
Charles Leclerc believes that the Mexican Grand Prix could be a good weekend for Ferrari “on paper.” The Prancing Horse showed some superb race pace at the United States Grand Prix, highlighting the possibility for them to have a late-season charge at the constructors’ championship, and they will be looking for a win in Mexico City to help achieve that.
Leclerc’s win at the Circuit of The Americas means he takes his 2024 win tally up to three after wins at his home Grand Prix in Monaco, and Ferrari’s home Grand Prix in Monza. Those wins mean he sits on the same amount as title challenger Lando Norris, and although the world title is also still a possibility for Leclerc, he needs to make up 79 points on Max Verstappen with only five races and two sprint races left in 2024.
However, a win in Mexico would close Ferrari’s 48-point gap to McLaren in the constructors’ championship. The Monegasque driver was asked prior to the race weekend if he could earn back-to-back victories, and he replied: “It’s very difficult to predict this season race by race. Last weekend went extremely well for us. We were particularly strong in races and in race pace. In qualifying, we struggled a little bit more.
However, on paper, Mexico should be quite a good track for us. But that doesn’t mean we’ll reproduce the kind of performance we’ve done in Austin. We just need to focus on ourselves, focus obviously on FP2 for me, I won’t be doing FP1, Ollie will be in the car for FP1. Just try and maximise the result this weekend, and then we’ll see where it ends up. But it’s obviously a very important part of the season, only five races to go. There’s the constructors’ title that is still possible, so we’ll give absolutely everything in order to try and take that one,” concluded Leclerc, who will be looking for a fourth Grand Prix victory come Sunday.
