Lewis Hamilton Addresses Heated Ferrari Radio Messages After Australian Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton has addressed the tense radio exchanges that took place during Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix, shedding light on the communication issues with his new Ferrari race engineer, Riccardo Adami.
The seven-time world champion had a difficult race in Melbourne, finishing 10th and securing just one point in what was a frustrating debut weekend with Ferrari. Beyond his on-track struggles, one of the biggest talking points was the apparent disconnect between Hamilton and his race engineer.
Communication Struggles in Ferrari’s Garage
Throughout the race, Hamilton appeared irritated when receiving instructions from Adami, a stark contrast to his long-standing and well-established partnership with Peter ‘Bono’ Bonnington at Mercedes. The shift in team dynamics has been a noticeable adjustment for the British driver, but Hamilton is not overly concerned.
While the exchanges may have seemed tense, similar interactions are not uncommon in Formula 1. A prime example is Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and his engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, whose intense but effective communication has led to great success. It is natural for drivers and engineers to take time to understand each other’s preferences and communication styles, especially in the high-pressure environment of a race.
Hamilton’s Take on the Situation
Following the race, Hamilton sought to clarify the situation, emphasizing that he and Adami are still getting to know each other and refining their working relationship.
“I think Riccardo did a really good job,” Hamilton stated. “We’re learning about each other, and after this race, we’ll go over all the comments and things I said during the race.”
He also pointed out that he generally prefers minimal radio communication during races, only requesting information when he feels it is necessary. However, he acknowledged that Adami was simply trying to do his job to the best of his ability, and they would analyze everything together moving forward.
Frustration Over Strategic Miscommunication
One of the key moments of the race that led to frustration was Ferrari’s handling of changing weather conditions. Hamilton felt he missed a crucial opportunity to switch to intermediate tires when rain began to fall.
“At the end, they told me it was only a ‘short shower,’ and the rest of the track was dry,” Hamilton explained. “So I thought I’d stay out on the dry line as long as possible. But they didn’t inform me that more rain was coming. Then, when it did, I was caught out because I lacked that piece of information.”
This miscommunication ultimately compromised his strategy and potentially cost him a better result. However, Hamilton was not overly critical, recognizing that these early races with Ferrari are a learning process for both him and the team.
Looking Ahead
Despite the frustrations, Hamilton remains optimistic about his time with Ferrari and is confident that he and Adami will develop a stronger working relationship. He understands that adapting to a new team takes time, and he is committed to refining their communication to ensure smoother races in the future.
With the 2025 season still in its early stages, Hamilton and Ferrari will be keen to build on their experiences from Melbourne and come back stronger in the next race. As he continues his journey with the Scuderia, fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how he and his team adapt and improve their race-day strategies.
