Lewis Hamilton Urges Formula One to Return to Africa
Lewis Hamilton has reiterated his call for Formula One to return to Africa, stating that he plans to engage in discussions with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali to explore the possibility. The continent has not hosted a Grand Prix since 1993, and Hamilton believes it is time for the sport to make a comeback there.
Kyalami Circuit in South Africa as a Potential Host
Hamilton has dismissed concerns about African circuits not meeting FIA standards, pointing out that the Kyalami track in South Africa is ready to host a race. He emphasized that Kyalami should be included on the calendar in the short term, with the potential to expand and build further racing infrastructure in Africa in the future.
Argentina’s Bid Complicates Efforts
Hamilton’s push for an African Grand Prix faces competition from Argentina, which has made a strong appeal to Formula One. The rise of Argentine driver Franco Colapinto has led to the country stepping up efforts to secure a race, adding pressure on the already packed F1 schedule.
Hamilton’s Focus Shifts to Rwanda
While South Africa remains a priority, Hamilton has also expressed interest in Rwanda as a potential destination for an F1 race. He described Rwanda as one of his favorite places and revealed that he has been engaging with people in the country to explore the possibility. Although it would be a longer-term project, Hamilton is impressed by Rwanda’s enthusiasm and willingness to be part of the F1 circuit.
