Liam Lawson Joins Red Bull as Max Verstappen’s Team-Mate for 2025

Red Bull Racing has confirmed that Liam Lawson will step up to partner Max Verstappen for the 2025 Formula 1 season, replacing Sergio Perez. The 22-year-old New Zealander, who has been part of Red Bull’s junior program, secured his spot over Yuki Tsunoda, his team-mate at Red Bull’s junior team in 2024.

The announcement came on Thursday, less than a day after the team confirmed Sergio Perez’s departure. Lawson’s promotion marks the culmination of years of hard work and determination, fulfilling a dream he has had since childhood.

“Being announced as a driver for Oracle Red Bull Racing is a dream come true,” Lawson said. “This is something I’ve aspired to since I was eight years old. The journey to get here has been incredible, and I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone at VCARB for their support. The experience of the last six races has been invaluable in preparing me for this opportunity.”

He also extended his thanks to Red Bull’s leadership, including team principal Christian Horner and advisor Helmut Marko, for their trust in his abilities. Lawson emphasized his excitement about partnering with reigning world champion Max Verstappen, expressing eagerness to learn from one of the sport’s finest drivers.

“I am thrilled to work alongside Max and learn from a world champion. His expertise will be invaluable, and I’m sure I’ll grow significantly as a driver. I can’t wait to get started,” Lawson added.

Lawson’s rise to the Red Bull senior team is a testament to his talent and the faith the organization has placed in its young drivers. Having proven himself in the Red Bull junior program and during his stint with the junior team, Lawson has demonstrated the skill and maturity required to compete at the highest level.

The decision to promote Lawson reflects Red Bull’s commitment to nurturing talent within their system. While Yuki Tsunoda was also considered for the seat, Lawson’s performances over recent seasons made him the standout candidate.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner expressed his confidence in Lawson’s ability to adapt and thrive in the competitive environment of Formula 1’s top tier. “Liam has shown exceptional promise and determination throughout his journey with Red Bull. We believe he has what it takes to succeed at the highest level alongside Max,” Horner said.

The transition to the senior team will be a significant step for Lawson, who has been part of Red Bull’s development program for several years. His progression through the ranks and recent performances in Formula 1 have solidified his reputation as one of the sport’s most promising young talents.

As Lawson prepares for his debut with the senior team, expectations are high. His partnership with Verstappen is anticipated to bring a fresh dynamic to Red Bull Racing, with the team aiming to maintain its dominance in Formula 1.

With this announcement, Red Bull has set the stage for an exciting 2025 season, showcasing their confidence in the next generation of drivers. For Lawson, it’s the realization of a lifelong dream and the beginning of a new chapter in his racing career.

The focus now shifts to the upcoming 2024 season, where Lawson will continue to develop with Red Bull’s junior team before making the leap to the senior squad. Fans and pundits alike will be watching closely as he takes on this new challenge.
