Luke McCowan has opened up about the emotional rollercoaster he experienced during his transfer to Celtic, revealing that he was brought to tears when he finally learned the move was going ahead. The 26-year-old midfielder, who had supported Celtic since childhood, completed a £1 million transfer from Dundee to Celtic on transfer deadline day. McCowan made his debut for the Hoops in their 3-0 Old Firm victory against Rangers but admitted that just days before, he believed the transfer wouldn’t happen.
Recalling the moment, McCowan shared that he was left devastated when Dundee manager Tony Docherty called him early on deadline day and told him the deal was off. This news came as a significant blow, as McCowan had been aware of Celtic’s interest since pre-season and had been holding out hope that the transfer would materialize.
Speaking on the Celtic FC Podcast, McCowan described the bizarre circumstances surrounding the move. “I didn’t believe it was going to be true until I signed the contract,” he said, acknowledging the unusual nature of the transfer, considering his age and background. Coming from Dundee at 26 to join a club like Celtic wasn’t something commonly seen, and McCowan felt privileged to have been given the opportunity.
After receiving the disappointing news from Docherty, McCowan went to training, but his frustration showed on the pitch. “I started flying into tackles,” he recalled. Docherty, aware that the move was actually back on, nearly pulled McCowan out of training, fearing he might get injured. After training, Docherty called McCowan into his office and revealed that the deal was back on, shaking his hand and telling him he would be a Celtic player. Overwhelmed with emotion, McCowan admitted he was “a mess” and started crying.
McCowan described how surreal the experience was as he soon found himself in discussions with Celtic legends like Gordon Strachan. Though the process was nerve-wracking and his heart was racing, McCowan was relieved and overjoyed when the transfer was finally completed. Looking back, he described the entire ordeal as “a bit bizarre,” but he is grateful for the trust the Celtic board and manager have placed in him.
Ultimately, McCowan’s dream came true, and his heartfelt reaction reflects just how much the move to Celtic means to him.
