Man city potential players returned from injuries against Everton tonight.
Wednesday night’s Premier League match between Everton and Manchester City is one of many that Sean Dyche’s team will be playing throughout the holiday season.
The weekend’s 2-1 loss to Tottenham saw the Blues drop to fifth place in the standings, as the defending champions were absent from domestic play while winning the Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia. After defeating Fluminense of Brazil in the championship game, City won their sixth major championship in 2023.
This evening, City travels to Goodison Park with many important players out and the hosts dealing with their own injury issues. The most recent injury updates from Pep Guardiola’s team are as follows:
In City’s victory over Fluminense, Rodri sustained a knee injury as a result of a careless challenge. Despite being ejected from the field, he participated in the festivities and trophy hoist.
It is anticipated that he will play again against Everton. Guardiola stated: “I didn’t speak, it looks from his face it’s good, it was a scare, the action was really tough, we’ll see in the next days how he reacts.
A’stress’ injury to his foot has kept Erling Haaland out of City’s last three games. Although he traveled to Jeddah with the team, he did not take part in the open training session held last Monday.
Guardiola stated earlier in the month that Haaland’s return date is uncertain, saying, “He arrived [on Friday], and the doctors will see him, and we will see how he feels.”
“He received therapy elsewhere. We’ll see if he can play in the first or second game, or when we return, assuming he can make the trip to Saudi Arabia. Although I doubt he’ll play [against Palace], he might surprise me. Players can recover more slowly at times or more fast. How he feels, day by day, week by week. He will play as soon as he is pain-free.”
Concern has been raised about Jeremy Doku’s muscle issue, which kept him off the pitch during a 2-1 victory against Luton Town earlier this month. The winger is unlikely to play against Everton because he did not participate in the Club World Cup and has not yet been spotted returning to training.
Regarding Doku, Guardiola said: “We have to consider it because of his explosiveness, but it’s muscular and not a huge, massive issue like Kevin [De Bruyne] had, for example. We must exercise caution. He might be ready in a week or two, I’m not sure, and then he’ll be ready once more.”
After missing four months of action due to an injured hamstring, Kevin De Bruyne returned to City’s training last week. Though his comeback is eagerly awaited, given the risk of recurrence, it is likely the midfielder won’t play in the final two games of 2023 against Everton and Sheffield United.
He is scheduled to return in January 2024. “If he [De Bruyne] said January, it’s January,” Guardiola declared. If only we could have him for the entire season. However, if he says, “May everyone have a happy new year.”
