‘I’ve Lost Patience’: Maple Leafs Head Coach Sheldon Keefe Frustrated by Amount of Bench Minors to Start Season

The Maple Leafs have an area for improvement, particularly in minimizing bench minors.

Toronto incurred their seventh bench minor of the season, leading the league, during Friday’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Maple Leafs now hold a two-point lead over the second-place teams—Anaheim Ducks, Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, and New Jersey Devils—all tied with four bench minors each.

Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe expressed frustration when questioned about the too-many-men penalty post-game, stating flatly, “I’ve lost patience” regarding the bench minors issue. He indicated that he has already addressed it with the team.

Prior to Friday’s infraction, Toronto’s last too-many-men penalty occurred on Nov. 17 during the NHL Global Series in Sweden, marking their ascent to the top of the league in bench minors.

“We’re discussing it for sure,” Keefe remarked on Nov. 18 in Sweden.

Since the 2021-22 season, the Maple Leafs have accumulated the highest number of bench minors in the NHL, totaling 30.
