Mohamed Salah and Fabio Carvalho netted first-half goals to secure Liverpool a 2-1 victory over Arsenal in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday, while Chelsea secured a comfortable 3-0 win against Club America.
Kai Havertz scored Arsenal’s lone goal in front of a 69,879-strong crowd at the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles’ home stadium.
Egyptian forward Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 13th minute, outrunning the defense to connect with Harvey Elliott’s precise through ball. Salah managed to fend off Arsenal center-back Gabriel and slotted a low left-footed shot past goalkeeper Karl Hein.
Carvalho extended Liverpool’s lead in the 34th minute, with Elliott once again providing the assist. The 21-year-old Portuguese winger met Elliott’s well-placed lofted pass into the box and volleyed a right-footed shot through Hein’s legs.
Arsenal narrowed the gap in the 40th minute when Havertz scored from close range after Martin Odegaard set him up in the six-yard box.
The second half remained goalless, giving Liverpool’s new Dutch manager, Arne Slot, a victorious debut, succeeding Jurgen Klopp. Arsenal’s new 22-year-old Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori was not included in the lineup.
In Atlanta, Chelsea’s French striker Christopher Nkunku scored a penalty in the third minute to start the match against Club America. Spanish teenager Marc Guiu added a second with a 21st-minute header, and winger Noni Madueke converted Arsenal’s second penalty in the 79th minute, finalizing the 3-0 win.
