Max Verstappen Admits to Talks with Toto Wolff About Potential Mercedes Move in 2024
Reigning Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen has confirmed engaging in discussions with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff about a potential move during the 2024 season. The revelation comes after a challenging year for Red Bull Racing, marked by both on-track struggles and off-track controversies.
Red Bull faced internal turmoil when team boss Christian Horner was accused of “inappropriate behavior.” Although an internal investigation ultimately cleared Horner of any wrongdoing, the incident led to significant friction within the team. Jos Verstappen, Max’s father, even called for Horner’s resignation, further fueling speculation about Red Bull’s stability.
Adding to their troubles, Red Bull lost key personnel as renowned technical chief Adrian Newey and sporting director Jonathan Wheatley departed, leaving a significant void in the team’s leadership. On the track, Red Bull’s performance faltered, falling behind rivals McLaren and Ferrari for much of the season.
Despite the challenges, Verstappen managed to secure the drivers’ championship, reinforcing his dominance in Formula 1. However, during the height of Red Bull’s issues, rumors of a potential exit for Verstappen gained traction as Mercedes made several public overtures. Wolff, known for his strategic acumen, openly expressed interest in bringing Verstappen to the Silver Arrows.
Speaking to Viaplay, Verstappen acknowledged the discussions with Wolff but reaffirmed his loyalty to Red Bull. “You always talk to each other, and I’m not lying that we [he and Mercedes/Wolff] sat together [around the Miami GP],” Verstappen revealed. “That in itself is not a problem either, I think. In the end, it’s still very nice where I am now.”
The Dutch driver explained that the conversations with Wolff were candid and constructive. “I think we’ve had very open and honest discussions. But on the other hand, I’m also very loyal to my team,” Verstappen said. “I just feel at home there, so then there’s not a lot to gain at the moment. I’m still very young, so a lot can happen in the future as well.”
Verstappen’s current contract with Red Bull runs until 2028, making an immediate switch to Mercedes unlikely. However, his acknowledgment of the talks indicates the appeal of Mercedes as a potential future destination.
Red Bull’s internal disputes have since calmed, and the team appears to be regaining its footing. Verstappen’s decision to remain with Red Bull demonstrates his confidence in the team’s ability to overcome its recent struggles.
The Dutchman’s loyalty to Red Bull also underscores the deep bond he has developed with the team that has been instrumental in his career. Red Bull provided Verstappen with his F1 debut in 2015 and played a pivotal role in his rise to stardom, culminating in his multiple world championships.
For now, Verstappen’s focus remains on Red Bull, but his comments suggest an openness to exploring new opportunities in the future. As the sport evolves and team dynamics shift, the possibility of Verstappen donning the Mercedes silver cannot be entirely ruled out.
The 2024 season may have tested Red Bull’s resilience, but Verstappen’s triumph despite the adversity reaffirms his status as one of the sport’s all-time greats. Whether he remains with Red Bull until his contract expires or seeks a fresh challenge elsewhere, Verstappen’s presence will undoubtedly continue to shape the landscape of Formula 1.
