Max Verstappen’s Potential Move to Aston Martin Could Signal the End for Fernando Alonso
Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya believes that Max Verstappen may soon receive an irresistible offer from Aston Martin, a move that could bring Fernando Alonso’s career in F1 to a close.
Is Max Verstappen Destined for Aston Martin?
Despite being under contract with Red Bull until 2028 and reaffirming his loyalty to the team, Verstappen’s future remains a hot topic of discussion in the F1 community.
Earlier this year, speculation arose that Aston Martin was prepared to offer Verstappen a staggering $1 billion deal to secure him for the remainder of his career. Although Aston Martin swiftly dismissed these rumors, they are reportedly still keen on signing the Dutchman, particularly to reunite him with legendary designer Adrian Newey, who recently left Red Bull.
Montoya, a seven-time Grand Prix winner, is convinced that a move to Aston Martin is inevitable for Verstappen.
“I believe Max will get an offer from Aston Martin that he simply won’t be able to turn down,” Montoya shared with Vision4Sport. “He may give Red Bull a chance for a year and allow Adrian [Newey] time to settle in, but if Red Bull struggles early on, I wouldn’t be shocked if by the third race, Max has already committed to another team.”
What Does This Mean for Alonso?
If Verstappen were to join Aston Martin, it could spell the end of Fernando Alonso’s F1 career.
The Spanish driver, who turns 44 in July, is currently signed with Aston Martin until at least the end of 2026. However, Montoya believes Alonso would be the one to step aside for Verstappen’s arrival.
“If Max moves to Aston Martin, I think Fernando Alonso will retire and take on a lifetime ambassador role with the company,” Montoya suggested.
While acknowledging that Alonso might not be thrilled about the decision, Montoya argues that it would be the right move for the team. He pointed out that dropping Lance Stroll, son of team owner Lawrence Stroll, is unlikely, as it could lead to Lawrence’s departure from the team altogether.
“If you remove Lance from the lineup, you risk losing Lawrence as well, and that would mean losing everything,” Montoya explained. “You lose Aston Martin, and then there’s no deal for Max. If getting Verstappen meant that Lawrence had to let go of Lance, that would be the wrong call for the team.”
If this scenario unfolds, Aston Martin could secure one of the most dominant drivers in recent F1 history, while Alonso’s storied career might come to a sudden end.
