After introducing JJ Redick as their new head coach, the Los Angeles Lakers face their next major challenge: persuading LeBron James to stay with the team if he chooses to opt out of his current contract and explore free agency.
According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, the Lakers are determined to re-sign James and are prepared to offer him the full three-year maximum contract available to him this summer.
James holds a player option worth $51.4 million on his current contract, which he must decide on by Saturday.
Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times indicated that James is likely to decline this option, although there is a prevailing belief that he intends to continue with the Lakers.
ESPN’s Bobby Marks detailed that if James declines his option, he can sign a three-year contract that could amount to $162 million, securing his tenure with the Lakers through the 2026-27 season.
Signing a three-year deal would extend James’s career with the Lakers until he reaches the age of 42. Despite occasional discussions about retirement in the past year, the 20-time All-Star has not specified when he plans to retire.
