FIA Announces Penalty Verdicts Following Uneventful Monaco Grand Prix
The FIA has released its official verdicts following two post-race investigations at the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix, shedding light on key incidents from an otherwise subdued race weekend in the principality.
Despite the excitement generated during Saturday’s qualifying session on the iconic Monte Carlo street circuit, Sunday’s race was notably lacking in drama. A new regulation mandating the use of at least two different dry tire compounds was introduced to encourage strategic variety and closer racing. However, in practice, the rule led to conservative strategies, early pit stops, and long stints of tire management, resulting in limited overtaking and a largely processional race.
Among the few incidents to draw attention was a first-lap collision between Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and RB’s Yuki Tsunoda. As the cars emerged from the tunnel section and approached the chicane, Gasly misjudged his braking and clipped the rear of Tsunoda’s car. Although both drivers escaped significant damage and continued racing, the FIA reviewed the contact to assess any breach of racing regulations.
In a statement released after the race, the FIA confirmed that penalties were issued in both the Gasly-Tsunoda case and another undisclosed incident. While the specifics of the second investigation were not immediately made public, the decisions resulted in minor adjustments to the final classification, though the leading positions were unaffected.
The FIA’s handling of the Gasly incident served to reinforce its stance on maintaining safe racing standards and clarifying the boundaries of acceptable on-track conduct. The decision also triggered conversations in the paddock about the impact of the new tire rule, with some calling for adjustments to better balance safety, strategy, and spectacle.
Though the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix may not go down as a classic, the FIA’s post-race rulings emphasized its dedication to fair competition and driver accountability, ensuring the integrity of Formula 1 remains intact at one of its most prestigious venues.
