Aston Villa names Unai Emery as their latest head coach.
Emmanuel Okogba reports that Aston Villa has selected Unai Emery as its new head coach following the dismissal of Steven Gerrard last week. The club officially announced Emery’s appointment on Monday via their website, confirming earlier speculations of his departure from Villarreal for a return to England.
The statement released by Aston Villa reads: “Aston Villa is pleased to announce the appointment of Unai Emery as the club’s new Head Coach. Unai joins from Villarreal, where he led the team to Europa League success by defeating Manchester United in the final in 2021 and reached the Champions League semi-finals last season. With over 900 games managed, Unai brings extensive top-level coaching experience, including a stint in the Premier League with Arsenal, guiding them to a Europa League final.”
The statement further highlights Emery’s successful tenures at Sevilla and Paris Saint Germain, where he secured multiple titles. Emery is set to assume his role from November 1st, pending the completion of his work permit formalities.
Gerrard’s departure came after a disappointing start to the season, with only two wins in eleven Premier League fixtures under his management.
