‘No problems’ when Fernandez joins Chelsea tour
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is confi dent that there will be no issues when midfielder Enzo Fernandez joins the squad on their pre-season tour in the United States on Monday, despite ongoing disciplinary proceedings related to alleged racism. Fernandez, 23, was accused by the French Football Federation of singing a “racist and discriminatory” chant after Argentina’s Copa America victory. The chant reportedly questions the heritage of France’s black and mixed-race players.
Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana, who has one cap for France, highlighted the incident by posting the video on Instagram and calling it “uninhibited racism.” FIFA has since launched an investigation, and Fernandez has issued an apology.
Maresca downplayed the situation, stating, “It is quite easy in terms of the player doing a statement to apologise. The club did the same, so I don’t think there is something to add in terms of the situation. It is already clear and clarified.” He expressed confidence that there would be no issues within the squad, which includes seven French players who are black or mixed-race. “I don’t think so. They are all human beings. I don’t think there are any bad intentions from any of them,” Maresca added.
Maresca, who was appointed as Chelsea’s manager in May, emphasized that Fernandez and the club have both addressed the situation appropriately. “I don’t think when Enzo is back that we will have any situations. Enzo clarified the situation, the club the same, so there is nothing to add. They are not bad persons or human beings. It can happen but I don’t think there are any problems at all. I spoke with Enzo and all of them,” he said.
Captain Reece James joined Maresca in previewing the upcoming match against Wrexham in Santa Clara on Wednesday. James acknowledged the sensitivity of the situation and indicated his readiness to address any issues if they arise. “It’s a difficult situation and Enzo has acknowledged he was wrong and quickly put his hand up to apologise to the club, team and people offended,” James said.
James noted that Fernandez has not yet joined the squad, so any potential issues would be addressed upon his arrival. “Enzo hasn’t arrived yet. I will have to make that judgement [on whether to get involved] when he does. I hope everyone can move forward with the situation,” he stated. James emphasized the importance of keeping internal conversations private. “I’ve spoken to Enzo and everyone involved but the conversations have to stay in house,” he added.
The controversy surrounding Fernandez comes at a time when Chelsea is working to build a cohesive team under Maresca’s new leadership. The manager’s assurances and the players’ willingness to handle the situation internally suggest a commitment to maintaining unity and focus within the squad.
The pre-season tour in the United States provides an opportunity for the team to prepare for the upcoming season, and Maresca’s handling of the Fernandez incident will be closely watched. As the team gears up for their match against Wrexham, the focus remains on football, but the underlying issues of racism and team dynamics continue to be significant.
In summary, while the allegations against Fernandez have prompted an investigation and public apology, Maresca and James are confident that the matter has been adequately addressed. They believe that the team can move forward without disruption, emphasizing the importance of internal resolution and mutual respect among the players.
