Australia has long been a key player in the world of Formula 1, with legendary names like Jack Brabham, Alan Jones, Mark Webber, and Daniel Ricciardo all making their mark. But now, it’s Oscar Piastri—the latest star from Down Under—who’s stealing the spotlight. With his recent winning streak, Piastri is closing in on Ricciardo’s win tally and could become Australia’s second-most successful F1 driver as early as this season.

Piastri’s rise has been nothing short of sensational. After claiming his first win at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix and following it up with a victory in Azerbaijan, the 24-year-old is now sitting on six career race wins. What’s more impressive is that he’s bagged three consecutive wins in 2025 and shows no signs of slowing down.

Currently, Australia boasts 49 Formula 1 wins, 37 pole positions, and 145 podium finishes. Three-time world champion Jack Brabham leads the Aussie F1 legacy with 14 wins, followed by Alan Jones with 12, and Mark Webber with 9. Ricciardo, once touted as Australia’s next world champion, currently has 8 grand prix victories to his name. However, his form plateaued after his initial success with Red Bull, and he never quite lived up to the lofty expectations.

Now, Piastri is fast approaching Ricciardo’s record. With 18 races still remaining this season, he has ample opportunity to not only equal but surpass Ricciardo’s tally. If he wins the next two races in Imola and Monaco, he’ll draw level with Ricciardo. A potential win in Spain could then see him move ahead.

Of course, staying on top won’t be easy. Piastri faces stiff competition from his McLaren teammate Lando Norris and the ever-dominant Max Verstappen. But so far, the young Aussie has risen to every challenge. In the Miami Grand Prix, Piastri built an eight-second lead as Norris and Verstappen battled behind him. That cushion proved critical when Norris eventually overtook the Red Bull, as it allowed Piastri to maintain his lead and clinch another victory.

What’s been particularly impressive is Piastri’s strategic mindset. Speaking after the Miami race, he reflected on how he’s adapting his driving to compete against seasoned rivals like Verstappen.

> “I’m starting to understand what you can and can’t do around Max,” Piastri told Sky Sports F1.
“In Saudi I did what I needed to do to win. Even though it took a few laps to get past him, it was the most efficient way.
I’ve learned that being on the outside of Max isn’t ideal—I had to find another approach. It felt more like a matter of when than if, but I had to time it right.”

This maturity, combined with McLaren’s current dominance, suggests that Oscar Piastri is not only Australia’s present star but possibly its greatest F1 talent in the making. With just three more victories needed to leapfrog Ricciardo, the rest of the 2025 season is shaping up to be a historic one for Australian motorsport.

Will Piastri break the record? All signs point to yes.
