Jordan Love’s contract extension talks with the Packers are expected to intensify after the draft

GREEN BAY, Wis. — In the near future, Jordan Love will begin to reap the rewards of his standout season as the Green Bay Packers’ starting quarterback.
After completing his fourth season in the league and first as the Packers’ signal-caller, Love is poised for a lucrative contract extension—potentially even before the start of the 2024 season. It’s not a matter of ‘if,’ but simply ‘when.’
“The Packers are committed to reaching an agreement with Love,” stated ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler during a recent SportsCenter segment. “He proved himself last year with a stellar season, so they view him as their long-term solution.”
Fowler anticipates Love joining the ranks of the NFL’s highest-paid quarterbacks; discussions regarding his contract are expected to intensify following the NFL Draft in two weeks. However, the Packers must wait until after the draft concludes to proceed. Rather than exercising Love’s fifth-year option last year, the Packers opted for a one-year contract extension, providing flexibility while ensuring Love’s status as the starting quarterback through the 2024 season.
Per NFL rules, a player must wait at least one year after an extension before becoming eligible for another. For Love, this date is May 3.

“Initial discussions have taken place, but we want to approach this cautiously,” stated general manager Brian Gutekunst during the NFL Owners Meetings in Orlando, Fla., last month. Investing heavily in a player with limited experience carries significant risk, especially when compared to established quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen—risk that Gutekunst acknowledges.
“Every contract extension, draft pick, or decision entails risk. It’s part of the process,” he explained. “Having had Love in our organization for four years, we know him inside out. While there are no guarantees for the future, we are confident in his character, work ethic, and dedication.”
Love has exceeded the team’s expectations, despite a challenging start to the 2023 season. Despite a 2-5 record in early November, Love led the Packers’ young offense to win seven of their next ten games, securing a playoff berth as the No. 7 seed in the NFC. Love guided the team to a victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round before falling to the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round.
During a 12-game stretch from November to the Divisional Round, Love showcased his talent, completing 68.5 percent of his passes for 3,132 yards, 26 touchdowns, five interceptions, and a 108.3 passer rating, ranking among the league’s top quarterbacks.
When Love signed his extension last year, Gutekunst admitted that the Packers were hesitant to exercise his fifth-year option due to the significant investment required for a player with minimal starting experience. Despite this, the organization remains optimistic about Love’s potential, a sentiment that reflects their decision to trade up for Love in the 2020 draft, despite having a future Hall of Fame quarterback on the roster.
