When the ODI World Cup Qualifiers began, the West Indies and Sri Lanka were among the pre-tournament favorites. The Shai Hope-led team, however, had a dismal tournament as they lost in the group stages to the Netherlands in a Super Over and the hosts, Zimbabwe, by 35 runs.

Prior to the Super Sixes, the two-time ODI World Cup winners faced an uphill battle as they needed to win every game and hope for favorable outcomes in other situations. But on July 1st, a Saturday, their aspirations were shattered when Scotland defeated them handily at the Harare Sports Club by seven wickets.

After winning the toss, Richie Berrington, the captain of Scotland, chose to bowl first. With the new ball, young bowler Brandon McMullen performed the heavy lifting, taking wickets of Brandon King, Shamarh Brooks, and Johnson Charles in the first six overs. Before a stand of 77 runs between Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd briefly spared the batting side’s blushes, West Indies fell to 81/6.
