Sergio Perez’s Father Drops Big Hint On His Son’s Next Career Move After Red Bull Exit
Sergio Perez’s father, Antonio Perez, has hinted at his son’s future in Formula 1 following Red Bull’s decision to part ways with the Mexican driver.
The announcement came shortly after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, during a meeting between Red Bull and its shareholders.
Liam Lawson has been confirmed as Max Verstappen’s teammate for the 2025 season, replacing Perez.
Despite stepping down from his driving duties, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner confirmed that Perez would remain with the team in a non-driving capacity.
Perez had signed a two-year contract extension with Red Bull in June, but his struggles on the track raised concerns.
The 34-year-old’s performance dropped significantly, both in qualifying sessions and races.
Although the RB20 car faced balance issues mid-season, which affected even Verstappen, the Dutchman managed to recover once the problems were resolved.
Perez, however, continued to falter, creating a stark performance gap between the two teammates.
This disparity contributed to Red Bull losing its hold on the top two positions in the Constructors’ Championship, overtaken by McLaren and Ferrari.
Antonio Perez recently addressed his son’s future during an interview with Imagen Television Mexico.
He ruled out a move to another racing series but emphasized that Sergio’s story in Formula 1 may not be over.
Antonio suggested that his son was open to exploring new opportunities within Formula 1, should they arise.
In the meantime, Sergio is expected to focus on his philanthropic efforts through the Checo Perez Foundation.
Antonio expressed confidence in his son’s potential to make a positive impact, stating, “I am sure he is going to do beautiful things through his foundation where he will unload all his energy. But I am also telling you that the movie is not closed if a very good opportunity comes along for Formula 1. I am sure that Checo would take it, but for any other category, I am sure he would not.”
Horner, meanwhile, provided insight into the discussions leading up to Perez’s departure.
Speaking to Talksport, as reported by RacingNews365, Horner acknowledged the challenges Perez faced throughout the season and explained why the decision was made.
He stated that Perez would continue to be involved with Red Bull in a limited capacity, including participating in promotional show runs in 2024.
According to Horner, both the team and Perez agreed that stepping away from the intense pressures of racing was the best course of action.
“He’s still going to be involved with the team,” Horner said. “He will be doing a couple of show runs with us during next year. But it was right for him – because it wasn’t enjoyable for him either, getting all this scrutiny and pressure and expectation every weekend.”
Horner further elaborated on the situation, noting that Perez had endured a particularly difficult year.
The team principal revealed that discussions about Perez’s future had been ongoing before reaching a final decision.
“We sat down last week – we’d obviously been talking about it a little bit beforehand – and decided that it was right for both of us, just to step back, for him to step out of the car, take a bit of time with his family, [and] work out what he wants to do.”
Despite the challenges, Perez remains a key figure in Formula 1, with his future still holding possibilities within the sport.
For now, he seems poised to take a step back, focus on his foundation, and consider his options moving forward.
Meanwhile, Red Bull looks ahead to the 2025 season with its restructured driver lineup, placing faith in Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson to maintain the team’s competitive edge.
