Bettis, though, went into the interview with Football Heaven this week on the back of good news. United have sealed a deal with the HSBC ground in Dore for a new training ground. Further to the training ground, United have also announced a partnership to redevelop and re-open the hotel at Bramall Lane.
Both these bits of off-field news are great for the club. But as usual, there was more for Bettis to answer, namely on player sales, the current Premier League season, and a plan for the future.
And speaking on player sales, Bettis admitted to Rob Staton on Radio Sheffield that the sale of Iliman Ndiaye had really hit the owners hard.
Stephen Bettis shares Iliman Ndiaye transfer story
Chatting about how a club like United can compete and be more like someone like Brighton, Bettis admitted it was a hard ask.
And when asked specifically on keeping players to try and help that ambition, Bettis revealed that Prince Abdullah was actually in tears when Iliman Ndiaye was sold.
MORE UNITED STORIES
“We’re working with limited funds, as you know. Prince Abdullah gives as much as he can, he’s the biggest supporter of the club and I’ve no criticism for what he does because he gives his heart and soul to it. I mean he was in tears when we sold Iliman, he did everything he could to keep him. But the reality of the situation is unless you’re spending hundreds and hundreds of millions, it’s really difficult to stay there,” Bettis said.
Bettis interview a welcome breath of fresh air for Blades fans
There’s a big agenda among some United fans on social media that we simply never hear from the club on big matters.
And while it’s true the owner remains quiet, you have to credit Bettis here for this interview. He covered a range of topics, including a new recruitment model and how he felt conned by Dozy Mmobuosi and others.
In the main, Bettis came across really well in this interview. He can only give away as much as the ownership and club want him to but overall, he seemed to answer thing honestly and with thought.
Sheffield United will always be a club battling to get among the big boys. That is, until a new owner with deep pockets is found.
Until then, Blades fans know what it’s all about really.
