SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY New boss unveils top player from….

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has provided an  update on striker.

Since Windass netted that memorable Wembley winner against Barnsley in last season’s League One play-off final, he’s only scored three times since.

Windass has played in exactly 50% of Sheffield Wednesday‘s Championship fixtures this season (19 of 38), with three league goals to his name as he approaches the end of his contract.

Danny Rohl is keen for Windass to stay ahead of next season, but he’s had to cope without the 30-year-old for more than six weeks now, owing to what Rohl has often described as a ‘difficult’ injury.

Speaking to The Star, Rohl gave an injury update on Windass as we break from Championship football for two weeks.

Rohl said:

“With Josh it is difficult. We made one step forward and one step back in this moment. It is difficult and we have to choose the right point to bring him back because otherwise we will have a new injury. We are at a critical point.

“Hopefully he is back after the international break or the latest point maybe after Middlesbrough, then we have him for the last six games. I cannot put pressure on him, it is about recovering well and making sure he is ready for not one but a lot of the last games.”

Sheffield Wednesday injuries

The international break comes at a very good time for Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday, who have some fresh injury concerns to deal with.

After the 6-0 defeat vs Ipswich Town, it was revealed that Barry Bannan and Ian Poveda are now carrying knocks, though there’s no clear timeline on either players’ potential return.

Callum Paterson is closing in on a return to action, whilst Juan Delgado and Kristian Pedersen remain sidelined.

Josh Windass faces uncertain future at Sheffield Wednesday

Given his contract situation, and the fact that he’s missed a lot of games through injury since joining Sheffield Wednesday during the 2019/20 season, Windass seems to face an uncertain summer ahead.

His class and ability is clear for everyone to see, and at League One level he’s still a top player which he proved last time round with 12 goals and seven assists, and then that all important Wembley winner.

And he’s shown glimpses this time round as well and if it wasn’t for injury, he surely would’ve played a much more important role in the XI.

But the fact is that injury has become a more and more prominent feature of Windass’ game over the past few years.

And earning a reported £18,000-a-week, he’s the Owls’ third highest-earner, so there’s certainly a case to get him off the books this summer.

It may be down to Windass and whether he can prove his worth in the final run-in, should he make a return that is.

Windass could make his return to action against Swansea City after the international break.
