Red Bull ELIMINATED as F1 team handed major championship boost
Red Bull’s dominance in Formula 1 has come to a halt as their bid for a double championship in 2024 ended following a disappointing performance at the Qatar Grand Prix.
Despite Max Verstappen securing yet another victory, his teammate Sergio Perez’s lack of points over the weekend left Red Bull unable to improve on their third-place position in the constructors’ standings, with only one race remaining in the season.
Verstappen, who has already clinched the drivers’ championship for 2024, delivered consistently with nine race wins this season.
However, Perez’s struggles throughout the year have hindered Red Bull’s ability to contend with rivals McLaren and Ferrari for the constructors’ crown.
The team’s elimination marks a significant setback, considering their recent history of championship success.
The Qatar GP weekend, held at the Lusail International Circuit, offered teams a chance to gather crucial points during the final Sprint event of the season.
McLaren capitalized on the opportunity with a one-two finish in the 19-lap Sprint, strengthening their bid for their first constructors’ championship since 1998.
However, despite Oscar Piastri’s P3 finish in the Grand Prix, McLaren couldn’t secure the title in Qatar due to Lando Norris incurring a 10-second stop/go penalty.
Their battle with Ferrari will now conclude in Abu Dhabi, with McLaren leading the standings by 21 points.
Elsewhere, Alpine made a significant leap in the standings, reclaiming sixth place after Pierre Gasly’s impressive top-five finish.
The result saw Alpine overtake Haas and VCARB, giving the team hope for a financial boost heading into the final race.
Meanwhile, Mercedes solidified their fourth-place standing, while Aston Martin remained distant in fifth.
Further down the order, the competition among the lower-ranked teams remained tight.
Williams and Sauber continued to struggle, holding ninth and tenth positions respectively.
As the 2024 season approaches its conclusion, the constructors’ championship remains undecided, with McLaren and Ferrari set to battle it out in Abu Dhabi.
Meanwhile, Red Bull will reflect on a season of mixed fortunes, highlighted by Verstappen’s brilliance but overshadowed by inconsistencies that prevented them from challenging for the team title.
