Shocking: What player did after missing crucial penalty in Everton defeat to Fulham.
Everton’s run in the Carabao Cup came to an end at Goodison Park as they lost to Fulham on penalties shootout.
Everton will have been frustrated with the outcome on a disappointing night at Goodison Park, but they put in a performance that is indisputable.
Sean Dyche should find little consolation in the fact that Fulham never really looked like scoring before Michael Keane gave Fulham the lead in a terrible goal to give up.
Then, in the 82nd minute, Everton responded with Beto, which at the moment seemed like a big goal. But in the end, it did little more than prolong the loss as the Toffees lost 6-7 on penalties, with Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye being the only Everton players to miss spot kicks.
What Onana did following the game attracted attention after the unfortunate outcome.
Onana’s miss was the game-winning one, so he will feel especially bad about his involvement in the penalty loss. Everton would have won the shootout 5-3 if he had scored, but instead he missed, and Gueye missed as well, sending the team to their first loss in four games.
But after the game, Onana was visibly sorry, according to Paddy Boyland.
One of the last players off the field, Onana raised his hand regretfully and thanked the supporters.
Even though penalties are a lottery, it’s encouraging to see Onana apologize; it demonstrates his concern, and the fact that he was among the last players off the field speaks volumes.
With Middlesbrough in the mix and maybe a very good chance at a final, Dyche will be devastated by the massive blow of missing out on a cup semi-final.
Dyche will be hurt by this because, as we previously reported on Tuesday, he had expressed his desire to win every game and go for the cup.
With a doubleheader matchup between Spurs and Man City scheduled for the holiday season, Dyche and his team won’t have time to reflect on it.
