Wolff CRITICIZED for Hamilton REPLACEMENT decision

Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya has criticized Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff for his decision to replace Lewis Hamilton with Kimi Antonelli in 2025.

The Italian teenager, currently excelling in Formula 2, will step into the Mercedes seat as Hamilton moves to Ferrari after a 12-year stint with the Silver Arrows.

Hamilton’s departure marks the end of a legendary era, with the seven-time world champion preparing for his final race for Mercedes at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Despite victories at Silverstone and Spa this season, the 39-year-old has struggled with consistency, sitting seventh in the drivers’ standings and 24 points behind teammate George Russell.

In contrast, Antonelli’s career is just beginning. The 18-year-old showcased his potential with standout performances in F2, including a feature race win in Budapest.

However, his limited experience has raised concerns about whether he is ready to replace one of the sport’s all-time greats.

Montoya expressed skepticism about the decision, suggesting it puts undue pressure on the young driver.

Speaking to Vision4Sport, the Colombian stated, “Mercedes has placed Antonelli in a challenging position.

Expectations are sky-high. Without the hype, he could’ve been a solid choice, but following Hamilton is a monumental task.”

Montoya also questioned Wolff’s motives, implying the decision may have been influenced by external pressures.

“Toto likely felt the need to justify the choice to sponsors and stakeholders.

He had alternatives like Carlos Sainz but opted for Antonelli, touting him as the future of the team,” Montoya explained.

While acknowledging Antonelli’s talent, Montoya pointed out that the teenager’s F2 performances, though promising, have not been extraordinary.

“He’s shown potential but hasn’t dominated,” he added, underscoring the risks involved in thrusting such a young driver into the spotlight.

The decision has sparked debate within the F1 community as Mercedes looks to rebuild after a challenging season.

Antonelli’s arrival signals a generational shift, but the pressure to succeed in a team with high expectations could be overwhelming for the rookie.

As the F1 paddock prepares for the season finale at Yas Marina, the spotlight remains firmly on Hamilton’s farewell and the questions surrounding Mercedes’ bold move to bet on youthful potential over experience.
