The question of where Xabi Alonso will manage after this summer—at Liverpool or Bayern Munich—remains unanswered.

After leading Bayer Leverkusen since 2022, the retired Spain international is currently one of the most sought-after figures in the dugout.

The North Rhine-Westphalian team is headed for its first-ever Bundesliga championship under Alonso’s direction. The team has risen to the top of the German competition this season.

With 26 games remaining in the Bundesliga season, the 42-year-old’s club leads Bayern Munich by an astounding 10 points and is still undefeated with 22 wins and 4 ties.

It is not surprising to see Alonso’s name associated with some of the greatest positions in European football, especially those of two teams he played for during his playing career, given that Leverkusen is poised to win the Bundesliga title for the first time.

Naturally, with the announcement that Jurgen Klopp will be departing Anfield at the end of the current campaign, Liverpool is searching for a new manager.

In addition, Bayern Munich will be looking for a new manager in the summer because Thomas Tuchel will be leaving the Allianz Arena at the end of the current campaign.

Before joining Real Madrid, Alonso played 210 games for Liverpool between 2004 and 2009, where he won the FA Cup and the Champions League under Rafa Benitez at Anfield.

The World Cup champion spent three seasons playing for Bayern under Pep Guardiola, making 117 appearances and won three Bundesliga titles during his time there.

And if Alonso does decide to leave the Bay Arena at the conclusion of the season, it seems that reports in Germany indicate he would rather join Bayern than Liverpool.

Bayern, Liverpool, and Real Madrid are reportedly among the teams “working” to try to get Alonso’s services, according to honorary president Uli Hoeness of Bayern.

Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany believes Bayern is Alonso’s preferred team.

He stated: “Our clear information is if he leaves Leverkusen this summer, he will join Bayern Munich and not Liverpool.”
