Steelers Avoid Top Center at NFL Combine

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers are closing out their week at the 2024 NFL Combine, and many anticipated they’d make a push to speak with a few top offensive linemen in the draft class. One name they did not speak with, that may come off as a bit of surprise, is Oregon center Jackson Powers-Johnson. The NFL Draft’s top center is expected to go near the 20th pick – Pittsburgh’s first – and many anticipated he’d be on their radar. But during their week in Indianapolis, they chose not to hold either a formal or informal meeting. Now, not meeting with Powers-Johnson doesn’t remove him from the Steelers’ list of candidates, but it is interesting they chose not to while still meeting with other top centers like Georgia’s Sedrick Van Pran.

The Steelers met with Powers-Johnson multiple times during the Senior Bowl. They’ll have an opportunity to bring him in for a top 30 visit and could attend Oregon’s Pro Day, even though it’s rare they fly to the West Coast for Pro Days. Pittsburgh has reportedly have interest in Van Pran and West Virginia’s Zach Frazier, and look for free agent options like former Los Angeles Ram Brian Allen as an option. Moving forward, their interest level in Powers-Johnson is something to monitor. As of now, it’s a question about if he’s still as high on their draft board as he was believed to be leaving the Senior Bowl.
