Boyd Cordner has become the third high-profile Sydney Roosters player to retire in 2021, forced out of the NRL because of repeated concussions.

Key points:
Boyd Cordner has not played since Game I of the 2020 State of Origin series
It was hoped he would return to the NRL for the Sydney Roosters last weekend
He played 181 NRL games, 20 tests for Australia and 16 matches for NSW
The Roosters, NSW and Australia Test captain confirmed his retirement at a press conference on Monday morning.

“It was an extremely tough decision for me to make. I spent hours on hours and sleepless nights trying to find a way for me to brush it aside to play on but for the first time in my career, I have to put my health and my happiness first,” Cordner told the media.

“Away from footy when was at home, it was a different story for me — I felt a different way, my heart was telling me that I wanted to play on and my mind and my head was telling me otherwise and I don’t think that was safe at all.”

“I feel like I have a lot more to give to the game and this club, but I can take peace from what I have done in the game and my career and the achievements.”

Cordner thanked his partner Jemma and his coach Trent Robinson for their support.

“I can’t thank him [Robinson] enough for what he has done for me as a player and as a person, the trust, the care, the love, the loyalty and confidence I have felt all of that — you’re the leader of this club and when you’re the head coach you can guarantee the club will be successful,” he said.
