The Cowboys might consider making an unexpected offseason trade.

Many fans and members of the media were taken aback when the Dallas Cowboys decided to acquire quarterback Trey Lance from the San Francisco 49ers. Naturally, as is typically the case, Lance was quickly painted as Dak Prescott’s star quarterback of the near future. With Prescott leading Dallas to an MVP-caliber season, those detractors’ aspirations have been dashed.

Lance, on the other hand, appears to be a fascinating trade chip. The Cowboys may try to take advantage of the fact that a number of NFL teams will be looking to add a quarterback this summer.

As Cooper Rush’s primary backup to Prescott, Lance does, in fact, provide more upside. But compared to Rush, he will also be worth a lot more in exchange.

Connor Livesay, an NFL writer, proposed that the Cowboys move Lance during the summer. In addition, he offered the Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks, and New Orleans Saints as potential landing locations.

Although the Cowboys could receive a higher return for Lance than they did from teams like the Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, or Seattle Seahawks, Lance might raise the bar for Dallas’ QB2 spot. Some teams would consider Lance a good option if they lose out on the best passers in the draft.

For teams who lose out on the top prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft, Lance would undoubtedly be a compelling choice. There was a reason why the 23-year-old quarterback was selected as the third overall choice in the 2021 NFL Draft. He hasn’t exactly been in a position to receive regular playing time.

Lance has only appeared in eight games during his career. He completed 54.9 percent of his passes for 797 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions in those games. In addition, he gained 235 yards and a touchdown on the run.

Even though none of this is confirmed, it all seems plausible. It’s possible that a needy team will select the Cowboys with a third or fourth round pick. Moving for that would be totally worth it.

Nevertheless, Lance can still be a valuable backup for Prescott to the Cowboys. It could turn out that Rush is the odd man out. Three quarterbacks who are more than willing to play if their number is called are a luxury for Jerry Jones.

This offseason, the Cowboys should be the subject of numerous speculations. There will probably be some trade interest in Lance, whether or not he ends up on the block.
