The Steelers have decided what to do with head coach Mike Tomlin.
There have been calls for the Pittsburgh Steelers and head coach Mike Tomlin to part ways after this season as the club struggles in the closing stages and the level of effort put in by some key players is questioned. Not only does that seem doubtful, but after this season the Steelers would like to offer Tomlin a contract extension, according to a report from Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk on Saturday.
Florio claims that Tomlin is currently working on the rosters for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, and the organization hopes to get an extension finalized before the start of the following campaign.
Tomlin’s deal is scheduled to end following the 2024 campaign. The Steelers do not want a lame-duck head coach, but they could theoretically bring him back without an agreement for the upcoming season. There would also be nothing preventing them from making a change if the 2024 season fails to turn out the same as the 2023 season did. Even so, though, it seems improbable.
The 2023 season is Tomlin’s 17th as head coach of the Steelers and while his overall resume has been outstanding there have been some challenges in recent years. On one hand, the Steelers have never had a losing record during Tomlin’s tenure and have only played one game (Week 17 of the 2012 season) in which they had been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.
