Paul Robinson claims that talks about the Dele Alli trade are presently the “only” way Tottenham might possibly sign Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton.

The Toffees center defender is “high” on Spurs’ list of possible defensive reinforcements, according to a report from Sky Sports on December 7. Former England keeper Robinson calls him a “fantastic” player.

However, he doesn’t believe a player who starts frequently for Sean Dyche’s team could make a move in January unless they use their “negotiating power” in negotiations to change the terms of the agreement that brought Dele to Goodison Park two seasons ago [Mirror, 3 November], which calls for Everton to pay £10 million if he plays seven more times.

“It’s difficult to see how you would get a player who is playing week in and week out at Everton out of the club in January at the moment,” the BBC Sport expert exclusively told Tottenham News.

They lack the financial means and capability to recruit further players.

He is now a pillar in the middle of their defense. Although he is an excellent player, the only other way they could pull this off is if they bring up the Dele Alli scenario.

Although he doesn’t appear to be playing, Everton is aware that they will undoubtedly have to pay Spurs more money if he does, but Tottenham has the negotiating leverage.

“I don’t know how exactly it’s structured, but that deal is in place. They could make it much more advantageous for Everton. They could ignore payments, wipe away payments, etc., but I can’t see Everton wanting to do business in January, especially not for a player who’s come into the frame late and has stood up and been counted this season, excelling at center half.

You examine Everton’s performance prior to the deduction of points.

“I really don’t think a deal is possible for him in January.”
