Max Verstappen and Gianpiero Lambiase to Continue Partnership Despite Red Bull Reshuffle
Red Bull Racing has clarified the future of Max Verstappen’s working relationship with his long-time race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, after confirming Lambiase’s promotion to a key new role within the team for 2025. Despite his expanded responsibilities, Lambiase will continue to serve as Verstappen’s race engineer, ensuring their successful partnership remains intact.
Lambiase’s Longstanding Role at Red Bull
Gianpiero Lambiase, an Italian-British engineer, first joined Red Bull Racing in 2015 as Daniil Kvyat’s race engineer. However, his role took a significant turn in 2016 when Kvyat was replaced by Max Verstappen at the Spanish Grand Prix. From that moment on, Lambiase became a crucial figure in Verstappen’s Formula 1 journey, guiding him through some of his most significant career milestones.
Since partnering with Verstappen, Lambiase has played an instrumental role in the Dutch driver’s four consecutive world championships from 2021 to 2024. His deep understanding of Verstappen’s driving style and technical feedback has been essential to Red Bull’s continued dominance in the sport.

While their professional relationship has been highly successful, it has also been marked by intense and sometimes heated exchanges over team radio. Their conversations often reflect Verstappen’s competitive nature and Lambiase’s calm but firm approach. A notable example of this occurred during the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, where Verstappen launched into a frustrated, expletive-filled outburst directed at both Lambiase and the team. Despite these on-track tensions, the two maintain a strong professional bond and mutual respect off the circuit.
Lambiase’s Promotion to Head of Racing
In 2022, Red Bull recognized Lambiase’s contributions by promoting him to Head of Race Engineering. Now, according to Dutch publication De Telegraaf, he is set to take on even greater responsibilities in 2025 as he steps into the role of Head of Racing.
This new position will see Lambiase overseeing Red Bull’s entire race operations department. His duties will extend beyond his work with Verstappen to include direct responsibility for the engineering teams that design and develop Red Bull’s Formula 1 cars. Additionally, he will lead the team’s strategy group, playing a key role in race-day decision-making and long-term competitive planning.

With this promotion, Lambiase’s influence within Red Bull has grown significantly. In the team’s hierarchy, he is now positioned just below two of the most senior figures—Team Principal Christian Horner and Technical Director Pierre Wache. This move highlights Red Bull’s confidence in his leadership and ability to contribute to the team’s continued success.
No Split with Verstappen Despite New Responsibilities
Despite taking on a broader role within Red Bull, Lambiase will continue to serve as Verstappen’s race engineer in 2025. While his attention will now be divided between his dual responsibilities, Red Bull has ensured that their successful driver-engineer partnership remains intact.

This decision signals the team’s commitment to maintaining stability for Verstappen, who has thrived under Lambiase’s guidance. With four world titles to their name, the duo has formed one of the most effective partnerships in recent Formula 1 history.
As Red Bull looks ahead to another competitive season, Lambiase’s promotion is expected to strengthen the team’s technical and strategic capabilities, while his continued presence alongside Verstappen ensures that the reigning world champion will have the support he needs to chase further success in 2025 and beyond.
