David James believes that Unai Emery, who he calls “awesome,” can help Aston Villa achieve its Champions League goals.
After their best start in 25 years, Villa will play their next game on Sunday against fellow high-flyers Tottenham, where they should be firmly in the top four. James had two seasons at the club before the turn of the century, finishing sixth and eighth, and the goalkeeper thinks the current group can go farther.
“They’re buzzing right now, and you have to think, ‘Champions League, why not?'” he remarked. “Unai Emery has excelled. Considering their spending power and the caliber of players they already have, you have to wonder what kind of an impact he might have had at Arsenal if he had been given more time, based on what he is doing with Villa.
“Umai Emery and the Villa supporters are a great combination, and it would be a huge statement if they were to win the Champions League.”
