Who is Jack Doohan? Australia’s young driver making his F1 debut in Abu Dhabi

Jack Doohan, an Australian racing prodigy and son of five-time 500cc motorcycle world champion Mick Doohan, is set to make his Formula 1 debut with Alpine at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The 21-year-old will replace Esteban Ocon for the season finale, marking his promotion from reserve driver to a full-time F1 seat starting in 2025.

Ocon, meanwhile, will transition to Haas for the post-season test and the upcoming season.

Alpine, undergoing leadership changes with Oliver Oakes replacing Bruno Famin as team principal, has finalized its driver lineup for the future.

Doohan will partner Pierre Gasly, who recently extended his contract with the team, as Alpine seeks to solidify its position in F1 after losing out on signing Carlos Sainz, who opted to join Williams.

Doohan’s motorsport journey began in karting, where he won multiple Australian titles, including the KA Junior and KA2 Championships in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

Moving to Europe in 2017, he showcased his talent with a third-place finish in the CIK-FIA European Championship and earned the title of best rookie in the 2018 British Formula 4 series.

In 2019, Doohan excelled in the F3 Asian Championship, finishing second overall with five wins.

He further honed his skills in the Euroformula Open Championship before returning to Asia in 2020, again securing the runner-up spot in the F3 Asian series despite technical setbacks.

Doohan faced challenges in his 2020 FIA Formula 3 debut with HWA Racelab but rebounded in 2021 with Trident.

His standout performance included four wins and seven podiums, earning him second place in the championship and aiding Trident’s teams’ title win.

This success led to his F2 debut with MP Motorsport later that year.

Joining Virtuosi Racing in 2022, Doohan claimed three F2 victories and transitioned from the Red Bull Junior Team to the Alpine Academy.

As Alpine’s 2023 reserve driver, he balanced F1 responsibilities with a full F2 campaign, finishing third overall with two wins and five podiums.

Having immersed himself in Alpine’s operations throughout 2024, Doohan is now ready for his first full F1 season in 2025, joining fellow Australians Daniel Ricciardo and Oscar Piastri on the grid.

His Abu Dhabi GP debut represents the culmination of years of hard work and steady progression through the racing ranks.
