The improvement from second-year standout Anthony Volpe is hard to miss.

He had a decent rookie year, earning the Gold Glove and hitting 20 home runs, but his batting average was just .209/.283/.383. It was a respectable showing from the then 22-year-old, but it was evident that Volpe had more to offer.
In the first 12 games of this season, Volpe has stepped up, slashing .372/.460/.581 with two home runs.
Bryan Hoch of MLB.com highlighted one early-season development for the Yankees to be optimistic about, focusing on the adjustments made by the second-year player to his swing. Hoch pointed out that Volpe’s changes were aimed at being more consistent against high fastballs.

His plate appearances have been impressive this season. Whether it’s his patience at the plate, his ability to battle with two strikes, or his overall comfort, it’s evident that something has clicked for him offensively.
It was expected that there would be a learning curve for the rookie in 2023, but improvements were necessary in 2024.
Playing shortstop for New York is no small feat, and while it’s still early in his second season, the former first-round pick seems to be finding his groove at the plate, making this lineup even more formidable than expected.
